How this tool works

Frequently asked questions

What is Image Colour Palette Extractor useful for?

Find a photo’s colours, pick a spot and copy HEX or RGB codes. Inspect the full-size result rather than relying only on the preview, particularly around fine edges and text.

Is my information stored?

Your text is processed locally in a browser worker. It is not uploaded by this tool or saved in browser storage. Clear releases the working input and result. Downloads remain in your normal download folder.

Are these exact paint or printing matches?

No. Photos depend on lighting, camera processing, colour profiles and your screen. These are browser-decoded RGB colours, not paint, Pantone or CMYK matches. Check a physical sample before buying paint or printing.

How are the automatic colours chosen?

A reduced sample is grouped into similar colours. Each group is represented by an average, so its colour may not be an exact original pixel. Simple images can produce fewer than the selected number of colours. Fully transparent pixels are ignored; partial transparency is combined with white.

What does the image picker sample?

The displayed working image, reduced to at most 1,200 pixels on its longest side. Scaling and browser colour conversion can affect values. For animated PNG or WebP, only one decoded frame is used. Changing the automatic colour count replaces any manually added colours.

What is included in the download?

Only the palette swatches and HEX/RGB labels, with One Useful Site and our homepage in the footer and author metadata. Your original photo and its camera metadata are not included. PNG preserves the palette image without lossy compression; JPEG may slightly alter swatch pixels, so use the printed codes for exact numeric values.
