Common conversion questions
Are UK and US gallons or pints the same?
No. One UK imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres; one US liquid gallon is about 3.78541 litres. The corresponding pints and fluid ounces differ too. US dry measures are not included here.
Can I convert grams into millilitres?
Not with a single universal factor. Grams measure mass and millilitres measure volume, so the conversion depends on the substance and its density. This tool converts within each measurement category.
Are ounces and fluid ounces different?
Yes. Ounces in the weight category measure mass. Fluid ounces in the volume category measure liquid volume. The weight units here are everyday avoirdupois units, not troy units used for precious metals.
How do I enter feet and inches, or stone and pounds?
Use one decimal unit. For example, 5 feet 6 inches is 5.5 feet, not 5.6 feet. There are 12 inches in a foot and 14 pounds in a stone.
Does this convert a temperature or a temperature difference?
It converts an actual temperature. A reading of 0°C is 32°F, but a rise of 1°C is a rise of 1.8°F. Temperature changes follow a different calculation.
Conversion reference: NIST conversion factors. Feet and miles use international definitions.
